Alleged high-speed drive ends with truck seizure

A Brooks man faces charges after allegedly driving up to 170 km/h while suspended in southern Alberta.

According to the Taber Police Service, a Regional Community Standards Unit officer was conducting speed enforcement on Highway 36 North on the evening of April 28 when a northbound Ford F-150 was recorded travelling 128 km/h in a 100 km/h zone.

Police said the officer attempted a traffic stop, but the truck accelerated to speeds reaching 170 km/h.

Investigators said the vehicle later reduced speed while turning west onto Township Road 144 before stopping.

Police identified the driver as a 33-year-old Brooks man who was allegedly operating a rental truck with a novice learner’s licence while under suspension.

According to investigators, the suspension resulted from two previous Immediate Roadside Sanctions suspensions and an earlier conviction for unauthorized driving.

The driver was issued summonses for speeding and driving while suspended under Immediate Roadside Sanctions. Police said the vehicle was seized for 60 days.

The man is scheduled to appear in Taber court on June 30.
