From bingo to giving new life to falling-apart items to an adult spelling bee, the Lethbridge Public Library hosts plenty of fun in June.
On June 3, to celebrate Seniors’ Week, the Main Branch will host Musical Bingo for Seniors. The activity runs from 1-2 p.m., as participants reconnect with the music of their youth.
Jonathan Jarvie from the Library said this is the first time the bingo program has been offered.
“We’ve seen some other libraries put it on in other parts of the country. It’s a new program. It has a target of memory recall and allowing for stimulating conversation between seniors, so they can talk about the past and think about their youth,” Jarvie added.
Presented in partnership with Environment Lethbridge, the Main Branch will host the return of Repair Cafe June 7 from 1:30-3:30 p.m.
Check lethlib.ca/events for details on accepted items and how to register.
“It’s been a really popular program. I think this is the second time we’ve run it. We’re going to be doing it quarterly each year. It’s an opportunity for people to bring old items in and get some expert volunteers to help them fix things up,” Jarvie noted. “This time around, we have some volunteers helping with appliances and household items, clothing and textiles, computers, and other electronics and toys.”
On June 6, there will be a screening of Jane Goodall: Reasons for Hope at 2 p.m. at the Main Branch.
“It’s an uplifting journey across the globe, highlighting powerful initiatives that are driving real change. It actually has a section that is on the reintroduction of bison by the Blackfoot Nation, and there’s some pretty dramatic views of Chief Mountain, so there’s a little bit of a local appeal to that, as well,” Jarvie said.
Don’t miss an Author Talk with David Chernushenko June 15 at the Main Branch from 6:30-7:30 p.m.
Hear Chernushenko speak about his book Standing with Underdogs, a family memoir about the Ukrainian-Canadian diaspora.
The train station in Lethbridge, which is no longer in service, is where the author’s father’s family first arrived from Ukraine.
A Q & A and book signing will follow the talk.
On June 19, Theoretically Brewing Company will host the third annual Buzzwords adult spelling bee and fundraiser.
The activity runs from 6:30-9 p.m. Register online at lethlib.ca.
“All the fees, registration fees and bonuses, all go towards programming at the Library. Spellers have the chance to purchase bonuses, such as Skip a Word, Thirty Seconds with the Dictionary, and Ask the Audience. We’ve got a new bonus this year, the Bee Sting. People can choose not to spell a word and send it to one of the other contestants to see if they can knock them out,” Jarvie explained.
