Canadians encouraged to help one another through blood and plasma donations

As Canadians get set to celebrate the nation’s birthday on Wednesday, Canadian Blood Services is putting out a call for donations.

Officials said donors of all blood types are needed to help ensure hospitals continue to have the blood and plasma that patients rely on every day.

CBS said many donation centres will be open for the July 1 holiday.

Officials reported that 46 per cent of Canadians believe donating blood or plasma is “a uniquely Canadian act of generosity”, while more than seven in 10 believe it is one of the more meaningful ways people can give back and help others.

CBS said currently, roughly two per cent of eligible people in the country currently donate as demand continues to grow.

Additionally, the summer season has led to an increase in cancelled appointments, according to CBS. “If you make an appointment, please try to keep it,” officials said.

If you are unable to make it to your appointment, please cancel it so we can find someone to take your place and consider re-booking as soon as possible.

Donation appointments can be made online, by using the GiveBlood app or by calling 1-888-236-6283. More on donating, including CBS locations, is available on the CBS website.
