A 30-year-old man was issued violation tickets for allegedly driving his motorcycle more than 90 kilometres per hour over the speed limit in Lethbridge.
The Lethbridge Police Service reported that on June 27, at around 10:30 p.m., a motorcycle officer conducting traffic enforcement spotted a group of riders traveling eastbound on Scenic Drive South.
The LPS stated that the officer continued to watch the group as riders stopped for a red light on 43 Street. When the light turned green, the group reportedly accelerated rapidly.
Police said that as the officer tried to catch up to the lead motorcycle, another driver overtook the officer at a reported speed exceeding 150 kilometres per hour.
The rider was pulled over and issued violation tickets for careless driving, speeding, stunting, and racing without a permit. Additionally, a notice was issued under Section 66 of the Traffic Safety Act, requiring the motorcycle’s muffler to be brough into compliance within 30 days. The motorcycle was privately towed, and the license plate was seized.
TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT
The LPS said that a total of 70 violation tickets were handed out during a recent targeted enforcement initiative.
Police issued one Immediate Roadside Sanction Fail, towed two vehicles for equipment violations, and towed another three for operating without valid insurance.
The targeted enforcement project from LPS was started in 2022 and has continued each summer since, in an effort to reduce high-risk and nuisance driving behaviours. The work is in addition to regular traffic enforcement by the Traffic Response Unit and patrol officers.
Residents are encouraged to report violations and incidents of high-risk driving by calling 403-328-4444. Police said public reports and traffic data analysis help guide enforcement priorities and police deployment.
