With temperatures expected to climb into the 30s this week, organizers are encouraging residents to support the Lethbridge Water Drive through bottled water and financial donations.
Now in its fifth year, the citywide initiative connects community contributions with local agencies that provide water to people who may face increased risks during hot weather.
Environment Canada is forecasting a high of 28 C on Tuesday, with temperatures expected to rise into the 30s through the remainder of the week and into early next week.
Residents can donate bottled water or financial contributions through the Interfaith Food Bank or Lethbridge Food Bank. Supplies will be shared with outreach teams and community organizations that distribute water to residents during periods of extreme heat.
Organizers expect more than 10,000 litres of water will be distributed collectively this summer.
Distribution partners include outreach teams from Community Links, the Downtown BRZ, Streets Alive, Sage Clan Patrol, Diversion Outreach Team, the Canadian Mental Health Association, MyCityCare and Recovery Alberta.
Since the drive began in June, the United Way has provided $7,000 to assist with water purchases through the Community Social Development Department and the Encampment Response Team. The City of Lethbridge will contribute up to $3,000 in matching funds for financial and water donations collected.
The citywide water drive runs until Aug. 31.
