The Town of Coalhurst will change its recycling service this fall as the community transitions to a new curbside recycling program under Alberta’s Extended Producer Responsibility framework.
Starting Oct. 1, curbside recycling service will be managed by Circular Materials, a not-for-profit producer responsibility organization overseeing Alberta’s transition to the Extended Producer Responsibility system.
According to the town, under the Extended Producer Responsibility framework, producers of packaging and paper products are responsible for funding and managing the recycling system, shifting those responsibilities from municipalities.
Town officials said the new system is intended to simplify curbside recycling while providing residents with a more consistent service and encouraging greater participation in recycling.
Officials said the updated program is intended to keep more recyclable materials in use by returning them to manufacturing as new products.
Residents can learn more about the transition and the new recycling program on Circular Materials’ Coalhurst information page.
