Byelection coming after Coalhurst councillor resigns

A Coalhurst councillor has resigned, creating a vacancy that will be filled through a municipal byelection.

Councillor Brody Prete’s resignation took effect Aug. 28. Mayor Deb Florence thanked Prete for his service to the community and his contributions to council.

“Serving on Council is a significant responsibility and we appreciate the time, energy and perspective he brought to the role. We wish him well for his future,” Florence said.

The town will need to hold a byelection to fill the vacancy. Under Alberta’s Municipal Government Act, election day is 120 days after the vacancy occurs unless council sets an earlier date.

Coalhurst council is scheduled to receive a report on the byelection at its regular meeting Sept. 15. Council is scheduled to establish the byelection at that meeting.

Once council establishes the byelection, the town will share information with residents about key dates, nominations and voting.
