Lethbridge Polytechnic introducing two-year Primary Care Paramedic diploma

Lethbridge Polytechnic is replacing its one-year Primary Care Paramedic certificate with a two-year diploma beginning in fall 2027.

The change follows requirements set by the Alberta College of Paramedics and is intended to prepare graduates for current standards for entry into the profession.

The new program combines classroom instruction, hands-on training and 520 hours of work-integrated learning in hospital and ambulance-service settings, giving students practical experience alongside emergency-service professionals.

President and CEO Dr. Brad Donaldson said the Lethbridge institution is proud to be doing its work when it comes to training and developing the next generation of Canada’s health-care workers.

“From our world-class Simulation Hub to unique work placements with industry partners, Lethbridge Polytechnic is a great option for those looking to start their career in health care,” Donaldson said.

The program includes simulation-based training and work placements with industry partners, giving students practical experience before entering the profession.

Dean of the Centre for Health and Wellness Debra Bardock said there are increasing complexities within the health-care system.

Quote requires verification: “Tne thing is clear – we need more health-care professionals to support our growing population,” said Debra Bardock, dean of the Centre for Health and Wellness,” Bardock said. “Graduates of this program will be proficient and confident in their abilities to either ladder into additional learning opportunities, or enter the workforce in primary patient care, helping those who are often in their greatest time of need.”

Graduates will be eligible to write the Canadian Organization of Paramedic Regulators’ Primary Care Paramedic examination as part of the process toward registration in Alberta and other Canadian jurisdictions.

The diploma also provides a pathway for graduates who want to continue their education toward advanced care paramedicine.

The transition to a diploma is being driven by the provincial regulatory body. Students who have already graduated from, or are completing, the existing one-year certificate program remain part of the current paramedic workforce.

Applications for the new Primary Care Paramedic diploma open Oct. 1, according to Lethbridge Polytechnic.

Lethbridge Polytechnic will also hold its Fall Open House from 1:30 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28. Prospective students can learn more about admission requirements and the fall 2027 program during the event.
