New interior and building design technology program announced for Lethbridge Polytechnic

Lethbridge Polytechnic has announced a new program.

Officials said the post-secondary is combining its Architectural Animation Technology and Interior Design Technology diplomas into one all-encompassing program.

The merging has resulted in the creation of the new Interior and Building Design Technology diploma, set to start in the fall of 2027.

“The IBT program is designed to prepare graduates for increasingly complex design and building projects, combining elements of architectural and interior design and technology into a comprehensive educational experience,” said Brenda Brandley, chair of the School of Spatial Design Technologies. “This new program is designed to equip learners with the skills and experiences they need to shape our communities and succeed in their careers.”

Officials said new areas of focus will include kitchen and bath design, architecture studies, advanced technology and building systems and code. The polytechnic said the courses are designed to prepare students to work in a wide range of industry roles after graduating.

Additionally, officials said the new program additions build on existing strengths, such as studio classes in residential and commercial design, the use of industry-standard software like AutoCAD, Autodesk Revit, Sketchup and Enscape, as well as engaging with work-integrated learning opportunities and practicum experiences.

Students currently enrolled in the Architectural Animation Technology and Interior Design Technology diplomas will be the last cohort of those programs and upon their successful completion, will get their respective credentials and be ready to enter the workforce.

“Current students and recent graduates can be assured there continues to be employment opportunities in the fields represented by the AAT and IDT programs,” said Brandley.

“We look forward to working with our students to support them through this transition and as they complete their programs.”

The polytechnic said this announcement builds on previous announcements for other new programs, including the Pre-Veterinary Medicine and the Primary Care Paramedic diploma. Officials said new programs in trades, health care, and technologies are being developed.

More details are on the Lethbridge Polytechnic website.
