LETHBRIDGE, AB – In an effort to save money and operate as efficiently as possible, the City of Lethbridge is cutting 61 full-time equivalent positions.
This restructuring opportunity was identified in a recent city-wide review. Thirty-five departments are being consolidated and about half the positions being eliminated were already being kept vacant during the pandemic.
The move is expected to save about $4.3-million annually.
The City stresses that it’s monitoring the reductions closely to mitigate any interruptions and residents shouldn’t notice any service changes.
Mayor Chris Spearman says “these types of initiatives are never easy” and difficult for all those involved but he notes that this “is critical work…. to be as agile as possible coming out of the pandemic.”
