LETHBRIDGE, AB – Yet another question is being added to your Municipal Election Ballot this October.
In addition to marking your preferences for Lethbridge Mayor and Council and answering a few referendum questions from the province, you’ll also be asked about prioritizing a third bridge.
Council voted 6-3 Tuesday to place a question on the election ballot that reads “Do you agree that city council should approve plans to construct a third bridge prior to 2030 as a municipal capital project priority?”
Neutral information on the expected cost of a third bridge, possible grants, and economic benefits etc. will be added to the City’s website prior to the vote.
The Chinook Trail River Crossing (Preliminary Design) was included as part of 2022-2031 Capital Improvement Program (CIP). In June, Council approved the first four years (2022-2025) of the 10-year capital plan. The Chinook Trail River Crossing is currently set for a $4-million preliminary design in 2027, which is outside of the four-year approval window. Projects scheduled beyond 2025 would come back to the next CIP deliberations.
This is actually the second question Lethbridge City Council has approved for the upcoming ballot as it also looks to gauge support for a ward system.
