Lethbridge College will be hosting a National Child Day Celebration this Saturday.
The purpose of National Child Day is to build community awareness and respect for the rights of children and youth, connect families with community resources available to them in Lethbridge, and the celebrate our children and youth. Vicki Hazelwood, Lethbridge Plays Co-Chair says it’s a good way to let families know what services are available to them.
“As organizations, we’re always trying to help community members and families know what services and programmes are available to them in our community, because we have a lot of great resources, but often, parents or families aren’t necessarily aware of where they can access those services,” says Hazelwood.
Lethbridge Plays has partnered with 20 community organizations that centre around children and youth to host a free family celebration, including Family Centre, Holy Spirit and Lethbridge School Division, Building Brains Together, and Big Brothers Big Sisters. According to Hazelwood, when families arrive each service provider will have something different to learn about.
“As families come, they will be able to talk with different service providers learn about what programmes they have their families and children and each service provider will have an activity or game or some form of play at their station so that kids can engage in that.”
The celebration at the college will include multicultural dancing, community agency information tables, games, prizes, a community craft project, indoor and outdoor activities, snacks and more.
The National Child Day Celebration is happening Saturday, November 19th at the Lethbridge College Centre Core from 9:30 am to 1 pm and is a free event.
National Child Day is celebrated across Canada every year in recognition of the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of the Child.
