The Meals on Wheels program is back with their 14th Annual 23 Days of Christmas Honorary Chef and Christmas Card fundraising program with Select People Solutions and Teamworks Career Centre.
This year a goal has been set to raise $30,000 with almost 70 per cent of the goal already reached thanks to help from sponsors.
President of Teamwork Training Ltd, Ryan Miller, says around $25,000 has already been raised for Meals on Wheels and with the sales from ’23 Days of Christmas’ and the Christmas Cards available at certain locations, the campaign could exceed $30,000.
“Our goal is to exceed $30,000 this year, so we’re already at the $25,000 mark in the campaign,so a combination of the Christmas Card sales and the other days that we hope to have sponsored, we’re very confident this year we’re going to meet and exceed that goal,” says Miller.
Around 2,000 meals are delivered over the days of the campaign with Meals on Wheels, with most of the days already sponsored by community members and local businesses. the campaign goal is to get all days sponsored in an effort to help raise funds to keep the program fully operational throughout the year.
Those looking to support the campaign can become an honourary chef and either sponsor a full day or a half day of meals. There is also an opportunity to assist with delivering the meals.
Other ways to help support are to purchase a $25 Christmas Card, which are available at Cuppers Coffee and Tea, Urban Grocer, Italian Table, and Water Tower.
Meals on Wheels has operated locally since 1970 and helps to provide hot and nutritious meals every day for members of the community who aren’t able to provide for themselves. Meals on Wheels, which is now part of the Lethbridge Senior Citizen Organization, relies on volunteers to help with the delivery of the meals which are prepared daily in the LSCO kitchen.
Executive Director of the LSCO, Rob Miyashrio, says the kitchen whips up around 100 meals a day.
“We’re doing a 100 meals a day, so our kitchen volunteers, our chefs, every morning are doing 100 meals.”
Over the past 13 years, the 23 Days of Christmas campaign has raised over $280,000 for Meals on Wheels.
