Promised Highway 3 bridge replacement under review

It appears the new provincial government is reviewing yet another promised project of the former NDP government.

Earlier this year, the New Democrats pledged $100 million to replace the current Highway 3 bridge over the Oldman River essentially making that stretch of road six lanes, three in both directions.

However, a statement sent to MyLethbridgeNow.com from UCP Transportation Minister Ric McIver says they intend to honour the NDP’s budgeted infrastructure commitments, subject to advice from the McKinnon panel regarding the province’s fiscal health.

“The Highway 3 bridge was one of several projects that were announced just before the election and not included in the budget, however it will be considered as part of the overall capital planning process”, says McIver.

The City of Lethbridge had been advocating for the bridge replacement, especially to improve safety for those merging off Bridge Drive onto Highway 3 eastbound.

The McKinnon report is expected to be released in mid-August.
