During the Lethbridge Police Service’s last targeted downtown enforcement project, officers executed 36 outstanding warrants, laid nine new criminal charges and arrested 19 people for public drug use.
According to LPS officials one of the men who was wanted on outstanding warrants attempted to flee during the August 29th operation, but was “eventually apprehended by Police Service Dog Robbie.” During the fifth downtown enforcement operation police also seized 49 doses of fentanyl and methamphetamine.
During the operation, officers also were able to talk with those in the community, answer questions and address concerns.
The downtown enforcement operation started back in March and includes members of the Downtown Policing Unit, Crime Suppression Team, Property Crimes Unit and Community Peace Officers. The project will be continuing throughout the rest of 2024 and according to officials those in the downtown area can expect to see “a heightened police presence on the days the teams are deployed to actively target high frequency offenders and areas with high volumes of crime.”
