Petwise Minute: The Importance of Socializing Your Pet Bird

Back to the Birds…

These social creatures thrive on companionship, and it’s extremely important to them!

In the wild, most of the birds we keep as beloved pets would be in a flock with constant feathered company. If a bird is going to spend most of the day alone, they really should be housed with a friend!

Some exotic, intelligent, and entertaining species you’ll sometimes see at Petland include:

  • The Parrotlet, the tiniest member of the parrot family. These blue or green birds, resembling miniature lovebirds, are found in Mexico, Central, and South America.
  • Caiques and Quaker Parakeets are native to South America.
  • The Kakariki, a goofy and fun-loving bird, resides in the wilds of New Zealand.
  • Ringneck Parakeets are native to Asia, India, and parts of Africa.
  • Splendid Grass Parakeets, often called the Scarlet-Chested Parakeet, are some of the most colorful birds and are found in Australia.

These birds are all highly intelligent and trainable, especially with reward-based methods. Since they are active and energetic, they should have ample opportunities to play and exercise outside of their cages.

They are also cuddly, animated, and affectionate! For all birds, community, family, and companionship are incredibly important.
