The Interfaith Food Bank Society of Lethbridge has issued a call for help, and Vista Radio Lethbridge answered that call.
On Tuesday, October 1, Vista’s 98.1 The Ranch, 94.1 CJOC and MyLethbridgeNow will host the ‘Thanks for Giving’ event in a partnership with Sobeys.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., team members will be at the Uplands Sobeys (327 Bluefox Blvd. North) collecting donations for the food bank.
“Canned goods, fresh produce or cash…it’s all needed now,” says Scott Armstrong, general manager for Vista Radio Lethbridge.
You can stop by the Uplands Sobeys to drop off a donation and talk with team members.
Executive director of the Interfaith Food Bank Danielle McIntyre says when it comes to food item donations, they are “always grateful for the Kraft Dinner and the Ichiban”, but they are trying to focus on getting items with “more nutritional value”.
“Especially right now, we’re really short on perishable items, so that is your breads and buns, of course fruits and vegetables, meat and dairy, but when you’re thinking non-perishable food items, we’re looking for things like cereal, pasta and pasta sauce, canned meat, canned fruit, things that have more high fibre and protein [are] always better than the [items] that are heavy in salt and sugar,” she explains.
McIntyre adds financial donations are a big help, too. Monetary donations can be made online or in-person at the food bank.
She adds Interfaith appreciates the community’s help.
“It’s wonderful when the grocery stores get involved because the food is right there. It makes it really easy for people to come out and do something good for others.”
McIntyre says it has been a tough year for the food bank, with volunteers serving about 2,500 individuals each month. She adds that equates to around 1,000 households, including 950 in August alone.
