A border crossing into the United States is closing for the season at the end of this month.
The Chief Mountain port of entry will close at 6 p.m. MST on Monday, September 30, 2024. The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) says it will reopen in the spring of 2025.
Because of its high elevations and harsh winter conditions, Chief Mountain only operates from May to September. Travellers can use the Carway, Del Bonita or Coutts ports of entry as alternative options during the seasonal closure.
Chief Mountain is along Highway 6 in Alberta on the boundary of Waterton Lakes National Park. At 1,722 metres, it has the highest elevation of all border crossings in Canada.
Officials say as of the first week of September, the Chief Mountain port of entry welcomed 58,462 travellers into Canada during the 2024 season. That is a jump of over 2,400 from the previous year. Those looking to cross are advised to check the border wait times at the CBSA website and ensure their goods are declared upon entry into Canada.
