Fall into art with new exhibits featured at SAAG

This weekend, the Southern Alberta Art Gallery’s fall exhibitions open with three new exhibits.

Events get underway Saturday with a gallery tour by exhibiting artists from 2-3:30 p.m. followed by an opening reception with the artists at 7 p.m.

“I think there’s a shared connection between all of the artists in their thoughtful approach to material, giving what might be assumed to be inorganic matter a life of its own, even allowing it to speak for itself,” notes Associate Curator and Exhibitions Manager Adam Whitford.

“Incidental Omens” envisions the invigorating possibilities of fantasy, altered states and communal experience. Dana Buzzee draws from places of concentrated physical and psychological transformation such as bathhouses, spas, dance clubs and dungeons.

“Practices of Suffusion” presents Tania Willard’s recent anthotype, cyanotype and berry prints, all created through the exposure of light-sensitive materials to the sun. Anthotypes emerge after applying a plant-based, photosensitive emulsion to paper that develops in the sunlight for weeks at a time.

Migueltzinta Solís works in installation, performance, sculpture and photography on projects that often combine Indigenous and queer materialities. “Hole Tech” refers to the transportative possibilities of the ancient Mexican tezcatl, round pieces of obsidian glass used in ceremonial divination practices.

Shop at SAAG with feature artist Anton Golosov. Golosov makes one-of-a-kind hand-carved and stone burnished spoons from green wood using only hand tools and techniques known in Eastern Europe and Scandinavia for the past 1,100 years.
