Pair charged in connection to weekend carjacking

Two people are facing charges in connection with an alleged carjacking incident over the weekend.

According to Lethbridge Police Service officials, on November 10th officers responded to the 400 block of Mayor Magrath Drive South just after 11:30 p.m. Officers received reports of an alleged between a man and woman, It was reported when police approached the pair the man left on foot. The man is said to have forced the driver of a nearby truck out of the vehicle.

“As the vehicle proceeded to leave the parking lot police observed a passenger inside and it was unknown at the time if the individual was a victim of the carjacking. The subject was driving erratically at high rates of speed and exited onto Highway 3 where he drove eastbound in the westbound lanes, and appeared to intentionally swerve at oncoming traffic,” reads a statement from LPS officials.

The truck was eventually stopped in the area of 43rd Street South after police used a vehicle intervention technique to immobilize it. The driver is said to have tried to flee on foot before being arrested.

Matthew Martens and Tracy Krystyne Fontaine both are facing charges connected to theft, with Martens facing additional charges for uttering threats and resisting arrest peace officer.

The 33-year-old and 35-year-old were both remanded into custody.
