Lethbridge College receiving $52,000 from Corus Entertainment to support broadcast and online journalism students.
The money will go toward the creation of a state-of-the-art active-learning newsroom.
College President and CEO Dr. Paula Burns says the upgrades will create a technologically-advanced setting where students and instructors can work in individual stations that replicate modern newsrooms.
“It means journalism students will have the opportunity to work with the latest technology,” says Burns. “This partnership will help us produce the next generation of journalists needed for the rapidly-changing industry.”
A portion of the $52,000 gift will also be used to create new awards to financially support students in the Digital Communications and Media program.
Corus’ Executive Vice President of Broadcast Networks, Troy Reeb, is a Lethbridge College alumnus and was on hand for the announcement Monday (Oct. 7). He says it’s about supporting a program that has given a lot to him personally and given a lot back to the community.
The new newsroom will modernize the existing Endeavour room, which has primarily been used as a print-based journalism hub. The upgrades will create a technologically-advanced setting where students and instructors can quickly share content and work in individual stations that replicate modern newsrooms being used to generate television, online, radio and digital stories.
