Coaldale golf carts can hit some public roads this upcoming season

Coaldale residents living in the neighbourhoods of Fairway Drive, Westgate and Cottonwood will be allowed to drive golf carts to and from the Land O’ Lakes Golf and Country Club, thanks to the passing of a new bylaw.

Coaldale Town Council unanimously approved Bylaw 911-R-02-25 Feb. 3. The previous bylaw was inconsistent with the Government of Alberta’s Traffic Safety Act and council repealed the bylaw, originally passed in the 1980s, at a Council meeting in 2022.

The Town has advocated for an advancement to the Traffic Safety Act over the years to rectify the situation, which the province made in 2024 and paved the way for the creation of an Alberta-wide five-year long golf cart pilot project.

Mayor Jack Van Rijn says by participating in this pilot project, residents living in neighbourhoods adjacent to the golf course will be able to drive their carts to and from the course. “Without having to fear being ticketed by local law enforcement.”

Residents living in the neighbourhoods will need to apply for a golf cart permit at the Town Office, prior to the start of the 2025 golf season.

Once a permit has been issued, golf cart owners will be required to attach the permit to their golf cart and make it clearly visible.
