Coaldale and District Handi-Ride Association doubles rider capacity with new bus

The Coaldale and District Handi-Ride Association’s new accessible handi-bus is said to have more than double the capacity of their old vehicle.

On Monday the organization had a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the new vehicle, which was made possible through outside financial support from the Government of Canada’s Rural Transit Solutions Fund, the Coaldale Community Wellness Association, Kinsmen Club of Coaldale and community grant funding from the Town of Coaldale. CHRA President Tim Janzen says the ribbon-cutting symbolized a step forward for the organization as it continues to work to provide accessible transportation to those in the community who need it the most.

“With more capacity, improved accessibility, and greater flexibility, the new bus will ensure that Coaldale residents continue to have a reliable and inclusive transit option for years to come,” Janzen says.

The design of the new bus includes features such as an access ramp instead of a lift, a winch system for “safe and controlled entry” especially during the winter months and seating that can be changed depending on the need. According to a statement the bus can seat sixteen passengers and one wheelchair, or twelve passengers with three wheelchairs.

The organization’s service runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and riders are encouraged to book their trips two days ahead of time by calling 403-360-5917.
