ASIRT investigating possible unauthorized use of databases by Lethbridge Police

EDMONTON, AB – An investigation is underway regarding a series of potential unauthorized uses of police databases by members of the Lethbridge Police Service.

Earlier this month, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) was directed to take a closer look.

On Feb. 1, the Director of Law Enforcement (DLE) was notified that the results of a request made under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIP) Act revealed a number of potentially unauthorized searches of the name and related files of an individual.

These searches were conducted between January 2018 and November 2018 and we have found out they involve Lethbridge West MLA Shannon Phillips.

ASIRT’s investigation will examine the instances where the databases were accessed, and seek to determine whether these activities were conducted for a lawful purpose.

As ASIRT’s investigation is underway, no further information will be released at this time.
