Train derailment near Irvine forces evacuation order

A train derailment in Cypress County Friday afternoon forcing the evacuation of some nearby residents.

It happened just before 5pm on the west side of Irvine, along the north side of Highway 1.

Alberta Emergency Alert issued an evacuation order for people within 7km of the derailment because of a chemical leak.

Highway 1 and other area roads were also closed.

The order was lifted by 11pm Friday night and the highway reopened and trains were moving again by late Saturday morning.

The Transportation Safety Board is investigating.
