Galbraith student recognized at Indigenous student award ceremony

This week, Sturgis Big Bull, a Grade One student from Galbraith Elementary School was recognized at the Alberta School Boards Association “Honouring Spirit: Indigenous Student Award” ceremony.

“Big Bull earned the honour for his infectious enthusiasm for acquiring knowledge, which has inspired both his classmates and educators alike,” says the Lethbridge School Division.

According to the ASBA, Big Bull is not afraid to take risks to facilitate his learning and embraces challenges and views them as opportunities for growth. “He proudly embraces and celebrates his Blackfoot identity. Not only does he know the Blackfoot prayer, but also confidently shared it in front of the entire school during a Treaty 7 Day event.”

Big Bull says one of the best things about being Blackfoot is the food, as his favourites are jerky and fry bread. He also likes being outside in nature.

Big Bull and the other 11 award winners were selected from 230 nominees. The award-winning students exemplify remarkable leadership, courage and dedication to their cultures and educational journeys. The 12 recipients from Kindergarten to Grade 12 across Alberta were nominated by members of their educational communities for their exceptional contributions.
