Claresholm man accused in officer-involved shooting in Calgary

A 35 year old Claresholm man is facing charges in connection to an officer-involved shooting in Calgary early Sunday morning.

Just after 4am, police were called to a parking lot in a Calgary shopping complex for reports of a suspicious person armed with a machete who was making threatening statements.

The situation escalated and the man was shot by police.

Even after he was shot, police say the man refused to drop his weapon and additional force was used to take him into custody.

Daniel Richard Balcerzak has been charged with assaulting a police officer, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, and uttering threats to cause death.

He remains in custody in hospital in stable, non life-threatening condition.

The incident is being investigated by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team.
