Street Machine Weekend set to burn rubber July 12-14

Street Wheelers’ Street Machine Weekend returns to Lethbridge July 12-14.

Chairperson Alex Dewar says Friday is the Controlled Cruise, Saturday is the 100-Footer and Sunday is the Show and Shine.

“The cruise is back after about a five-year hiatus. Last time we did it was in 2019. It’s a controlled cruise along 3 Avenue. It provides a safe outlet for classics and show-worthy and unique vehicles to participate. Essentially, it’s a big loop. That runs from 7-10 p.m. on Friday,” says Dewar. “And we’re really pushing the online registration for it to have an idea of who is going to be there. The numbers are limited and the City of Lethbridge has been a real help with working on a route.”

Dewar adds if you are sitting around Galt Gardens or anywhere along 3 Avenue, “it’s going to be a great time.”

On Saturday, the 100-Foot Race is a unique and exclusive event for Street Wheelers, Dewar notes. “It’s such a short distance, but it’s also an exciting distance. Typically, drag races are eighth mile or quarter mile, where this gives you 100 feet. Sitting in the grandstands at Bully’s, you’re close to very powerful machines.”

Typically, Dewar explains, participants get two runs and if you’re fast enough, you make the final. “It’s a lot of fun, loudness and smokiness.”

“Just a great time for all,” adds Dewar. The event starts at 10 a.m. at Bully’s Grandstand.

According to Dewar, the Show and Shine is at Galt Gardens. “We typically have around just over 600 vehicles parked in the park. We’re getting good at cramming in a lot of vehicles in there.”

The highlight again this year, Dewar says, is Vendor Row along 3 Avenue between 5 Street and 7 Street and on 5 Street between 1 Avenue and 3 Avenue. “We’re going to have a bunch of vendors there, so food trucks and different non-food vendors.”

“Any show-worthy vehicle is welcome for the show. Register in the morning and the show runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. We have trophies at 3 p.m. If you want to see some priceless vehicles, that’s the place to do it,” says Dewar.
