Downtown traffic construction impacts starting Monday

Drivers are being advised of a temporary road closure downtown, set to start on Monday.

The temporary road closure will impact 6th Street South between 3rd Avenue and the laneway near Festival Square as crews complete warranty repair work, including replacing damaged concrete panels. According to officials the damaged panels will have to be removed, reformed and poured.

Traffic impacts on 6th Street South will be the same as if there was an event taking place at Festival Square, with between 3rd Avenue and 4th Avenue to be closed. Another traffic impact is northbound traffic on 6th Street being detoured down the laneways. Sidewalks will remain open during the closure and parking will be unaffected.

It will be around a week before the concrete cures to the required strength for the road to be reopened and until then barricades will be in place. City of Lethbridge officials anticipate the work will be completed by Monday, April 14th weather permitting.

During the work, drivers are asked to keep a safe distance from all excavated areas and machinery. Motorists also are urged to slow down and pay attention to construction signage.
