Lethbridge’s wastewater treatment plant is putting in extra work due to what is reported as a significant amount of contamination.
According to City of Lethbridge officials, the contaminant is believed to be vegetable oil and is overloading the facility’s processing capabilities, putting extra strain on the system which treats the water before it is put back into the Oldman River.
According to a statement from city officials, no oil has ended up in the river water and employees are monitoring the situation.
“As a precautionary measure, containment booms were installed on the river near the wastewater treatment plant to minimize any risk of spillover,” the statement reads. “Staff will be monitoring into the evening, with equipment on hand, should any cleanup be required.”
Additionally, the city has notified Alberta Environment as per regulations and is working with them to address the issue.
The cause of the contamination is under investigation.
