Following last week’s incident involving the Whoop-Up Drive bridge, a traffic restriction has been put in place.

On August 6, a flatbed trailer carrying heavy equipment struck the underside of the bridge. The driver of the semi-truck was subsequently charged.

Support pillars remain in place under the bridge and as a precaution, the City of Lethbridge is restricting heavy load trucks, excluding standard pickups, from crossing westbound on Whoop-Up Drive. Eastbound traffic is not impacted by this move.

Heavy load trucks are asked to use Highway 3 as an alternate route until further notice.

Crews continue to assess the damage from last week’s incident and determine the next steps. The City adds that amid an ongoing summer construction project, several incidents of unsafe driving have been reported in the work areas.

“While we understand the slowdown is an inconvenience, we are asking drivers to please respect each other’s safety by following reduced speed limits and construction signage,” the City says in a news release.

Additionally, an increased volume of traffic has been reported on westbound Highway 3, so drivers are asked to use extra caution as crews adjust various situations.

Officials say the end goal remains the same for all: to ensure everyone gets to their destination safely.
