Whoop-Up Drive repairs continue, project on schedule

Repair work continues on Whoop-Up Drive in Lethbridge.

Crews are fixing damage caused by an incident in early August, when a flatbed trailer carrying heavy equipment hit the bottom of the bridge, damaging four of six steel girders.

Beginning at 9 a.m. on Thursday, November 20, the south lane of westbound Whoop-Up will re-open, and the middle westbound lane will be closed for the project. Officials note that the westbound north lane remains open to traffic.

The City adds the repair project is on schedule:

  • November 20 – 27: Repair girder two. Lane two will close and lane three will reopen. Officials say this will maintain two westbound lanes, and when this repair is complete, all three westbound lanes will be open.
  • November 28 – December 10: Repair girder four. Lane four will stay closed. When this repair is complete, all three eastbound lanes will be open.
  • December 10 – 12: Repair girder one. No lane closures are required for this repair.

Crews have repaired girder number three.

The work is scheduled between 7:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. on weekdays.

The City says the entire project is expected to be finished by Friday, December 12.

The speed limits that were implemented in early October will remain in place, as will the weight reduction for westbound traffic.
