Starting this fall, Lethbridge Polytechnic will welcome students to its new Pre-Veterinary Medicine diploma.
The two-year program is designed for students interested in animal health and science. Participants will explore courses in animal genetics, biochemistry, anatomy and physiology, and nutrition.
The program provides a strong scientific foundation to prepare students for advanced veterinary studies and a variety of careers in the animal sciences, the school said.
Dr. Kevin Smith, dean of the Centre for Business, Arts and Sciences, said the diploma offers several pathways for students once completed.
“By combining foundational learning and clear transfer opportunities, we are preparing students who are passionate about science and animal health for success in professional programs and high-demand careers in the field,” Smith said.
The diploma builds on Lethbridge Polytechnic’s laboratory facilities and is structured to give students hands-on experience in scientific and animal care techniques, according to the school.
After finishing the program, students may transfer to the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, meeting the 10-course requirement for admission to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program. Graduates may also continue at Lethbridge Polytechnic with a Bachelor of Agriculture Sciences, prepare for the Medical College Admission Test, or enter the workforce in roles such as a laboratory assistant, animal researcher, livestock technician or animal nutrition consultant.
