Reuse Rendezvous returns to Lethbridge this Saturday

This Saturday is a great time to find new-to-you treasures during Reuse Rendezvous.

Launched by the City of Lethbridge in 2011, Environment Lethbridge now hosts the event that gives you an opportunity to give away unwanted gently-used items, while diverting them from the landfill.

“Reuse Rendezvous is an easy way to clean out your closets and find new homes for items that you no longer need,” explained Environment Lethbridge Executive Director Kathleen Sheppard.

For anyone who has some odds and ends that have accumulated in their garage or basement, Sheppard said, this is a great way to get rid of some unwanted items.

According to Sheppard, hundreds of households participate in Reuse Rendezvous every year. The event is held twice annually in May and September.

Environment Lethbridge estimates residents divert 1,800 boxes of smaller items and nearly 2,000 mid-large sized items, including second-hand books, electronics, and furniture.

“Freecycling these items not only benefits homeowners, but it’s good for the environment,” Sheppard added.

If it’s in good condition, chances are someone will give it a new home, Sheppard noted.

Participating in Reuse Rendezvous is easy. After registering online, you can place items marked “Free” in front of your home before 9 a.m.

“Throughout the day, people can come and look and take the items they want. Basically, it’s an opportunity to pass things along to other folks,” said Sheppard.

After 5 p.m., any remaining items should be reclaimed by their original owners.

Residents who wish to participate in Reuse Rendezvous are also encouraged to register their location on an online map hosted by Environment Lethbridge.

Reuse Rendezvous is one of Environment Lethbridge’s most popular events. “We get a great response every year. For last year’s event, we had over 450 households participate, and somewhere around 3,000 people who went around and looked for items,” Sheppard shared.

Sheppard added the first week of June will be Environment Week. “We’re working with the City and some of our other partners on a variety of different workshops and events that’ll be happening that week, as well.”
