Waterton Park under “high” avalanche risk following heavy snowfall

Heavy snow this week has significantly heightened the risk of avalanches in and around Waterton Lakes National Park.

Parks Canada saying Friday the chances of a snow slide are “high” in both the alpine and treeline and the the risk below the treeline is “considerable”.

Between 50 and 70 cm of new snow has been blown around by gusty wind, and that’s created slabs that will be very easy for a person to trigger.

Parks Canada says it’s expecting to see a natural avalanche cycle at all elevations around Waterton.
