Summer activities at the Lethbridge Public Library keeps kids reading

Lethbridge Public Library has a few fun and interactive activities planned for July.

Ready, Set, Read! gives kids the opportunity to practice reading skills over the summer break.

Younger students are paired with student volunteers to read together, followed by games, activities, and special guests related to the weekly theme.

Registration is required. Visit lethlib.ca to choose which weeks your child(ren) will attend.

The week of July 13-17 features Outer Space Week at the Main Branch. The week of July 20-24 features Dinosaur Week at the Crossings Branch. The week of July 27-31 features Animal Week at the Main Branch.

Online Services Librarian Jennifer McDevitt said kids get the opportunity to practice their reading skills during the summer break, “and really combat that summer slide.”

Don’t miss the library’s Makerspace: 3D Printer Open House July 20 at the Main Branch from 5-8 p.m.

Curious about 3D printing? Come see the library’s 3D printer in action. Whether you’re completely new to 3D printing or already have experience, everyone is welcome. The library currently offers print-on-request services using PLA filament, with plans to expand into additional materials, as the library grows its makerspace and responds to community interests.

McDevitt noted the library acquired the 3D printer last year. “We’ve got about a year of use out of it, so far.”

“We’re really hoping we’ll get some more people in the queue printing things,” added McDevitt.

Patrons that utilize the 3D printer have been creating everything from replacement parts for equipment to fidget toys and key chains.

“I had somebody print the other day a little container to carry your dog bags in. She said she was going to put that in her car, so it wouldn’t have it going all over the place anymore. I thought that was a cool thing to be making with a 3-D printer,” said McDevitt.

According to McDevitt, the library is a great place for families to hang out and stay cool and is full of free entertainment. “All our free programs, books, movies, video games, and all that sort of stuff you can check out.”
