Beat the heat: City offers resources to find relief from hot summer weather

Mother Nature has brought the heat to southern Alberta, and the hot conditions are set to continue next week for Lethbridge and area.

The City of Lethbridge has shared a reminder on resources that are available to help community members beat the heat.

Public water stations are available at local parks, including Nicholas Sheran Park, Legacy Park, Henderson Lake Park, and Galt Gardens.

The stations hook up to hydrants to provide a continuous water source and a way for residents to grab a quick drink or fill up their bottle.

The City said in tandem with the public water stations, several local groups have teamed up for a water drive to make sure water is available to those who need it.

The City has pledged up to $3,000 to support the initiative. Officials said resources will be distributed, as needed, by different outreach groups. Donations of water are also welcomed at the Interfaith and Lethbridge food banks, and Streets Alive Mission.

LOCAL POOLS AND CITY SITES

Local pools are open, with schedules and more details available on the Recreation Excellence webpage. Additionally, spray parks are open at Legacy Regional Park, the Rotary Centennial Fountain at Galt Gardens and the Gyro Spray Park.

Officials added that during operating hours, City of Lethbridge facilities are open for the public needing a break from the heat and sun.

WATER CONSERVATION & FIRES

Due to the higher temperatures and lack of precipitation, the City has asked residents to conserve water where they can, to be mindful of the use of electronics and to keep air-conditioning units at a moderate temperature to help prevent overloading the power grid.

A fire ban is in effect for the Lethbridge river valley due to the current conditions. Officials said a lack of moisture and hot conditions increases the risk of fast-spreading fires.

ENCAMPMENTS

The City noted that residents who spot an encampment or conditions that could present a fire or safety risk should report it. That can be done online on the City website, by calling or chatting online with Lethbridge 311 or by calling 911 for emergencies or an active fire risk.

OTHER COMMUNITY RESOURCES

Officials issued a list of local service organizations that are available to help community members during the hot weather:

  • Lethbridge Wellness Shelter and Stabilization Unit
  • Wood’s Homes Lethbridge Youth Shelter and Opportunity Hub
  • Streets Alive Mission
  • Diversion Outreach Team (403-892-3707)
  • Lethbridge Public Library Main Branch
  • Lethbridge Soup Kitchen
  • SAGE Clan

Additionally, Alberta Health Services has more information about protecting yourself from the heat on its website. Current and future heat and weather warnings are posted on the Environment and Climate Change Canada website.
