Boating advisory for local rivers lifted

A boating advisory for the Oldman and St. Mary Rivers has been lifted.

Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services issued the advisory July 2 due to elevated river flows and hazardous conditions.

Since then, the City of Lethbridge reported water levels and flow rates have decreased, allowing normal recreational activities on and around the river to resume.

While conditions have improved, river users should continue to exercise caution.

Water temperatures remain cold, and reduced visibility can make submerged hazards difficult to see.

Anyone planning to float, paddle or boat on the river should:

  • Wear a properly fitted lifejacket or personal flotation device
  • Carry all required safety equipment, including a cellphone
  • Check current river conditions before heading out
  • Avoid alcohol and other intoxicants
  • Tell someone where you’re going and when you expect to return
  • Be aware of hazards, including the weir, which must be portaged around

Current river flow information is available at rivers.alberta.ca.
