A Cardston business owner will spend the next year under house arrest and will pay a hefty fine, after admitting to selling weapons and ammo without checking for proper licences.
Dean Sommerfeldt, 59, and his son Todd Sommerfeldt, 33, were charged in 2017 after officers searched K & D Implements in Cardston and seized the store’s entire inventory.
Dean pleaded guilty in September to three counts of transferring weapons or ammunition without authority and one count of improperly displaying firearms. Court heard he sold ammunition and three firearms to two undercover RCMP officers without ensuring they had valid Possession and Acquisition Licences (PAL). It was also found that several racks and storage cases in K & D Implements were not properly secured.
Dean was sentenced Monday (Dec. 9) to 13 months of house arrest and is also required to pay $20,000 in fines. The Crown notes that this sentence is meant to serve as a deterrent to similar business owners that the costs of these crimes outweigh the benefits.
All charges against Todd were stayed by the Crown, but he will be subject to a four year weapons prohibition.
