City traffic initiative to help curb speeds, improve road safety

With the City of Lethbridge building on previous traffic-calming initiatives, crews are beginning to install temporary traffic-calming curbs at 11 locations throughout the community.

According to the City, this initiative helps improve road safety and reduce speeds.

Traffic-calming curbs are large precast concrete units placed along the edge of a roadway to create temporary curb extensions or narrow driving lanes.

These measures are designed to encourage slower driving speeds, improve visibility between pedestrians and drivers, and shorten crossing distances at key locations.

Nine of the 11 locations were identified through the development of School Travel Plans, as part of the Road Safety: Communication, Culture, and School Travel Planning project.

The 2026 temporary curb installation locations are:

  • Mildred Dobbs Boulevard & Mary Cameron Crescent North (near St. Teresa of Calcutta School)
  • 23 Street & 15 Avenue North
  • 18 Street & 4 Avenue North (near Westminster Elementary School)
  • 21 A Street N (Mid-block near Immanuel Christian Elementary School)
  • 5 Avenue & 19 Street South (near École St. Mary)
  • Corvette Crescent South (mid-block near General Stewart Elementary School)
  • 21 Street South (mid-block near École La Vérendrye)
  • 20 Street & 21 Avenue South (near École Agnes Davidson)
  • 32 Street South (mid-block between 28 Avenue and 32 Avenue South)
  • Rivergreen Road West (mid-block near St. Patrick Fine Arts Elementary School)
  • Jerry Potts Boulevard West (mid-block near Mike Mountain Horse Elementary School)

Locations were selected following a review of road safety data, including vehicle speeds, pedestrian crossing activity, visibility, collision history, and other site-specific safety considerations.

Site-specific designs have been developed to maintain access to adjacent properties, while supporting proper roadway drainage.

The temporary installations also provide flexibility, allowing the City to evaluate how each location performs before determining whether permanent changes are warranted.
