Petwise Blog: Exploring the World of Degus and Chinchillas

Degus and chinchillas are gentle, sweet, super social South American small animals that are found on the slopes of the Andes mountains. Chinchillas have some of the densest, softest fur on the planet! Both are excellent jumpers and need plenty of room to exercise.

They thrive with companionship, and in the wild, both live in large communities, sometimes with as many as 100 individuals!

High intelligence is often found in animals that live in large cooperative communities. They develop trust, problem-solving skills, and even empathy. Degus and chinchillas are extremely intelligent. Their behaviors suggest a degree of reasoning.

They both use several different sounds to communicate with one another and are known to have excellent eyesight.

In the wild, they’ll eat dry leaves, grasses, roots, and stems.

At Petland, they’re fed tons of hay, pellets, and some treats.

Degus and chinchillas can be prone to diabetes, so fruit and sugary treats should be avoided.

They love their dust baths, which sounds like the opposite of getting clean!

We have special, safe dust that they have an absolute blast rolling around in!

Oh, and these guys have yellow-orange teeth, which is a sign of good health.
