Source of natural gas smell sourced to old pipeline valve east of Lethbridge

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Did you happen to smell natural gas around the city Monday?

The Lethbridge Public Communications Centre received several calls regarding the smell of gas.

The source and location of the smell has been been tracked to a pipeline valve that had been dropped off for recycling, east of the city along Range Road 212.

This valve contained the chemical mercaptan, which is added to natural gas to give it that pungent odour for detection.

ATCO was able to neutralize the chemical and valve component and that smell should subside over time.

All sites surrounding the city have since been inspected with no further issues.
