Lethbridge County reminding residents of fire safety ahead of holidays

With the holiday season in full swing, Lethbridge County is reminding residents to keep fire safety in mind. According to the local municipality, things such as festive lights, decorations, cooking and baking, and even house guests can increase the fire risk.

The top thing residents are reminded to do is check both the carbon monoxide and smoke detectors in a home to make sure they are in working order. For decorations and lights, residents are advised to keep their decorations, including Christmas trees, away from heat and ignition sources like space heaters, candles and fireplaces. Residents are also being reminded if they are planning to burn candles, to keep them away from anything that can light on fire and out of reach of children and pets.

As well those with wood-burning fireplaces in their homes are advised to keep a screen over them and to not burn any gift wrapping or boxes in them.
