LPS highlighting commercial truck safety in June

Throughout June commercial vehicle safety is a key focus for law enforcement across the province.

According to the Lethbridge Police Service, commercial vehicles are an important part of keeping the province and country moving; however, their size and weight can create unique risks on the road.

Tips to stay safe while out on the road with a commercial vehicle is to remember these trucks have large blind spots so it is important to give them space. As well drivers are urged to never try to squeeze past a commercial truck while it is turning because they need more room.

According to statistics across Alberta in 2023, truck tractors were two per cent of casualty collisions and were involved in 10 per cent of fatal crashes. As well commercial vehicles are more likely to be involved in collisions because of vehicle-related issues. As well it is reported truck drivers were more likely to run off the road or make improper lane changes while driving but are less likely to tailgate or make risky left turns.

In Lethbridge County, 81 per cent of commercial vehicles in 2023 were flagged as out of service by Peace Officers.
