UPDATE 09/08/2025: The Air Quality Warning has been lifted by Environment Canada.
BACKGROUND
An Air Quality Warning has been issued for Lethbridge by Environment Canada.
Officials note that smoke is causing poor air quality in some areas and could impact visibility on local roads and highways.
The agency suggests individuals limit their time outdoors, if possible.
As of Monday morning, the Air Quality Index for Lethbridge is listed at a three, which is considered a ‘low risk’.
By Monday night, that is forecast to increase to six, which is listed as a ‘moderate risk’.
The agency says people more likely to be affected by the wildfire smoke include those 65 and older, those who are pregnant, infants and young children, individuals with an existing illness or chronic health condition.
However, during events of heavy smoke, officials say everyone’s health is at risk regardless of their age or condition.
Individuals could experience symptoms such as eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches or a mild cough. More serious but less common symptoms include chest pains, wheezing or a severe cough.
When inside, Environment Canada advises that you keep windows and doors closed as much as possible and protect your indoor air from wildfire smoke. That can be done by using a clean, good quality air filter in your ventilation system and/or a certified portable air cleaner that can filter fine particles.
For extended periods outdoors, officials suggest wearing a respirator-type mask.
