It’s National Legion Week in Canada, as Lethbridge’s General Stewart Branch No. 4 is holding a variety of events this week, including an Open House Saturday.
National Legion Week is designed to educate Canadians on the good work their local branch does in their community. The week kicks off annually on the third Sunday in September.
It reinforces the important role branches play in a shared mission to serve and support Veterans, as well as contribute to the well-being of communities.
The week also serves as a vehicle to drive new traffic to branches, attract new members and recruit new volunteers, as the Legion’s annual poppy campaign gears up.
“We’re excited to open the branch doors to the community and share what we’re all about,” says local Branch President Dave Martin. “This is a great opportunity for the public to learn about our programs and services, along with other local service groups at the Open House.”
Glenn Miller from the General Stewart Branch No. 4 adds the local branch is happy to join National Legion Week. “And showcase what the Legion does in our community and help across Canada.”
Legions, Miller notes, play a vital role in their communities and support Veterans. “Saturday is going to be a big day. We’ll have different organizations that are part of the Legion and are affiliated with the Legion, such as Quilts of Valour. The Hong Kong Veterans Association of Canada will also be on-hand for a display.”
Miller says the Hong Kong Veterans Association just had its 80th anniversary in Ottawa.
According to Miller, a local Legion and its community is a big connection in the long-term. “Next year will be the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion and our branch received its charter 100 years next October.”
“So, it’ll be long-term in the community,” Miller adds.
