Akkermans to run for mayor in Coalhurst Municipal Election

Having previously served as a Town of Coalhurst Councillor, Scott Akkermans is running in this upcoming Municipal Election as a mayoral candidate.

“As a current Councillor, I bring four years of firsthand experience and a deep understanding of our community’s needs,” notes Akkermans, who has lived in the town since 2020.

Over the years, Akkermans has advocated on issues critical to Coalhurst, while being on various committees, including director for Towns South for Alberta Municipalities.

As for goals, Akkermans says Coalhurst must create a more sustainable future, while making sure seniors’ needs continue to be a part of the discussion.

Council, Akkermans adds, must work together to shift the “tax burden away from residents by promoting business growth and optimizing municipal services.”

Akkermans also believes regional collaboration means recognizing shared efforts lead to increased success. “By pooling resources and expertise, communities can address challenges, drive economic growth and improve the overall quality of life for everyone involved.”

According to Akkermans, building on the progress of the current council, the upcoming term is an opportunity to forge a more sustainable and supportive Coalhurst.

By fostering a culture of respectful dialogue, Akkermans hopes to challenge ideas and not people, while navigating issues before they become public conflicts.

Decisions that affect your day-to-day life are made by people who want your community to be the best version of itself, notes Akkermans.
