Popson Park to close Monday for parking improvement project

A park on the west side of Lethbridge is set for some improvements.

The City of Lethbridge says it is addressing an area of concern at Popson Park: parking.

The spot has two gravel parking lots and officials say on busier days, they fill up fast, which has led to “visitor frustration, roadside parking where it shouldn’t happen and safety risks for both pedestrians and drivers”.

Beginning Monday, October 20, crews will start work to expand both parking areas. The project will include more parking spaces to handle larger crowds, improved signage to help guide traffic, as well as new accessible spots to make sure everyone can enjoy the park.

As part of the project, the park will be closed to the public starting Monday.

“Once finished, your next visit to Popson Park should be easier, safer and even more enjoyable – whether you’re out for a paddle, a picnic or a playful afternoon with your pup,” reads a statement from the City.

Officials say the park is scheduled to reopen on November 17.
