Epic ‘Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament’ to throwdown this Saturday

Historically, a good old-fashioned duel would settle a beef with an ornery cuss of a neighbour or out-of-towner blown into town like a drifting tumbleweed.

These days, a classic game of rock, paper, scissors will settle the score, as the Lethbridge YMCA hosts an epic showdown of quick thinking, fast reflexes and pure fun.

Inclusion Lethbridge Board of Directors Vice-President Pat Robb says the Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament provides a community connection and is a family-friendly event. “From zero to 99-plus. It’s an event we felt was important because it can be done by anybody and any ability. It’s nice, easy and fun.”

This friendly competition is for seasoned RPS strategists or for the uninitiated, and it’s an opportunity to win prizes and bragging rights.

There will be a children’s play area, a photographer and a free space for people to try out rock, paper, scissors if they’ve never played it before.

Prior to the COVID pandemic, the event was held for five years and started up again in 2023.

Plans for the day are simple, Robb notes, registered participants show up to the tournament, and the head referee will provide the rules and how it’s all played. “Then we go ahead and play.”

There will be prizes for first, second and third place, and a trophy for the winner.

Registrations are now closed, but everyone is encouraged to come cheer on the participants.

A small canteen will also be available for drinks and snacks.

Rock, Paper, Scissors 2026 kicks off at 1 p.m. Feb. 21 at the Lethbridge YMCA through the north entrance and on the second floor.

Costumes and team themes are encouraged.
