RCMP urge caution while driving during annual Alberta highway cleanup

Motorists travelling Alberta highways this weekend are being asked to slow down as a large-scale cleanup gets underway across the province.

The Alberta RCMP said the effort, set for May 2 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., will bring more than 12,000 volunteers to roadsides. The cleanup will move to May 9 if weather conditions are unfavourable.

Among those taking part are about 8,000 young people from organizations such as 4-H clubs and the Junior Forest Wardens.

Workers will be visible along highways wearing safety gear, with signage marking active cleanup areas.

Drivers are urged to reduce speed and watch for people near traffic lanes.

Police said extra enforcement will be carried out throughout the day to promote safe driving and limit speeding.
